For the last 20 years people from all over North America have gathered to celebrate the migration of nearly 350 species of migratory birds between nesting habitats in North America and non-breeding grounds in Latin America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This year Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is inviting you to join them in the celebration with 2 special Refuge tours on Saturday, May 12.
The first tour is designed for beginners: those who appreciate birds and want to be able to identify the different species. The 1-hour walking tour starts at 8:00 am at the Visitor Center and will focus on birds around the Center and in the desert arboretum. Guides will familiarize participants with basic sight and sound tips to hone those beginning birdwatching skills.
At 1:00, a tour bus will leave the Visitor Center to take participants to the center of the Refuge to. During this 2-hour tour participants will observe all the waterfowl, shorebirds and raptors the Refuge has to offer during this spring migration. This 2-hour in-depth tour is for those who want to practice what they learned on the morning walk and skilled birders as well.
Both tours are free, but reservations are required. The afternoon tour is limited to 24 (bus capacity). You may sign up for either or both by calling 575-835-1828. Binoculars are recommended!
